Let’s face it, most of the selection of women costumes aren’t exactly covering you head to toe, unless you are a ninja or an Eskimo. Halloween is all about being a bit sexy and flirty, but that often means short skirts and bare shoulders. And Halloween has this one recurring issue where it gets, well, cold. Especially at night when everyone is heading out to bars and parties.  So how can you keep warm?

Besides a great big coat, don’t forget extra accessories like a scarf and gloves. If you can actually use these as part of your adult costume, even better! But even if you think covering up ruins the costume, just remember, you are only doing so while outside. You can take it off as soon as you get to where you are going, you just don’t want to get sick in the process!

Another great option for those short skirts for the in between is leg warmers! Or, if you can get away with tights underneath in a color that will compliment and work for your costume, it’ll help shield your legs from the cold. Use knee high boots to accessorize with and you’ll have even more coverage!

So don’t let yourself freeze out there this Halloween, take a few steps to stay warm without sacrificing the look of the costume!

Choosing Baby Costumes

October 10th, 2011 | Posted by ChristineM in Halloween Tips - (0 Comments)

When it comes to dressing your baby for Halloween, you want a costume that is cute but also comfortable and warm enough in the weather. There are so many options with baby costumes! But picking the right one is all about combined style and comfort.

First of all, choose a warm costume. Luckily, most baby costumes are made for just that. You’ll want to find costumes made of a thick material and that are footed and have a hat. Gloves are fine too, but your child may feel more comfortable with their hands freely exposed.

Make sure the baby costume is safe. You don’t want anything with buttons that can fall off, string, or other removable parts that can possibly choke the baby.

You want to make sure you choose a costume that your baby can crawl or walk in  (if old enough) with comfort. Something that won’t restrain them. Make sure the costume is also comfortable to sleep in and made on a non-itchy material. A tag-less costume may be best but you can always cut the tag out.

You want your baby to be cute, sure, but you also want him to be safe and comfortable this Halloween!

When it comes to completing your Halloween costume, it’s all about the makeup. You can have the coolest costume ever but if you don’t have the right makeup, it just detracts from the entire look. Whether your ghoulish and bloody or sexy, there’s some universal makeup applying tips that can help with the process.

First you should use a base. Often a foundation or a primer works well. Cover the whole face with it and the makeup you apply will stick to it, making the look last longer. From there you can apply your full makeup however needed. If you are going for a zombie, geisha, or skeleton look, a white face paint makes the perfect base. Any color paint that you are going to use across the entire face needs to be applied with a sponge. It will allow for better coverage and ease of layering.

If you use any eye shadow for a look, you should dab with a brush instead of wiping across the lid. It gives a thicker, darker color and make it easier to control just how much you want to use. Using a brush for any lipstick will also work better than applying straight from the tube.

There are also solutions that help set makeup afterwards and make it more waterproof so you won’t have to worry about wiping it off by accident. You’ll look great with your Halloween costume fully complete!

Halloween Pumpkin Carving Tips

September 26th, 2011 | Posted by ChristineM in Halloween Tips - (0 Comments)

When it comes to decorating for Halloween, one of the coolest and most creative things you can do, after coming up with your adult costume of course, is carve your own pumpkin. There’s a step by step process to creating the coolest jack-o-lantern you possibly can.

First you need to wash your pumpkins surface of any dirt and other residue and dry it completely.  Then you want to cut off the top with the stem. Make the incision big enough for your hand to fit inside the pumpkin but not too big. You need enough space to be able to reach in and remove the guts and pulp from the inside. Scrape the sides of the pumpkin with a spoon to really get every last bit out.

Whether you are using stencils or free hand, you’ll want to draw in the pumpkin so you have a line to follow for when you cut. The best carving tools aren’t always the biggest. Small carving knives can really help create small, detailed designs. When you are finish carving out your design, wash it one more time to help it last longer.

You can place a tea candle inside to light it up at night, or use battery powered, flame-less candles if you don’t want to have to worry.

Once you’ve got the jack-o-lantern ready, you’ll be all set with your Halloween costumes and other house decor!

Whether you are going to a party or just going to be big kids and see if the neighbors give you any chocolate for trick or treating, celebrating Halloween as a couple can be a lot of fun. And if your honey is ok with it, you two could match your costumes to make something thematic and unique!

One classic idea is mixing superhero adult costumes. Have him be Batman and you can be Catwoman or Batgirl. Or maybe you can playfully be a female Robin! Superheros are big in general this year because of the massive amounts of superhero movies that have come out recently, so you’ll be on trend and just look great together!

Everyone knows about the age-old pirates vs. ninjas debate. Using it to your advantage could be a clever move! One person can be the pirate, the other a ninja and you can reenact battles between the two of you! And maybe you can show the world that pirates and ninjas can get along…sometimes.

If you want to go with more classic horror characters, going as a vampire couple is a sexy and fun idea and it’s easy to find plenty of options with adult costumes. Or, to put a spin on it, one person can be the vampire and the other the victim!

There are countless combinations of couple costumes you can do, just make sure you both are into the idea!

Halloween is on its way and by October you’ll want to be a little more festive at the office. You may already be thinking of your adult costume for the season, but you also want to decorate your cubicle because let’s face it; you spend most of your time there. So here are some great ideas for the office space!

Hanging lights are great as long as they aren’t a distraction for co-workers. You can string them along the top of your cubicle. You can easily find orange and black lights, or get festive with pumpkin, ghost, or candy corn shaped string lights.

Add a small pumpkin or two to your desk! If you don’t want to go through the hassle of carving it out, you can just draw a face with a black sharpie.

Using Halloween masks to hang as decor is a great idea too. You can hang them with a thumbtack on a cubicle wall or prop them up in the corner of your desk. Get creative with placement. It also makes the mask handy when you want to put it on and scare your neighboring co-worker.

Don’t be afraid to get creative with wall hangings and fake spider webs, like the reception desk pictured. You can easily take the kind of decorations you use in the home and hang them on the side of your desk or cubicle walls. Bring the holiday to work and have a spooky work day!

When it comes to throwing an adult costume party for Halloween, it can be one of the best events of the year, or the worst. It depends on if you are prepared. The most important and crucial step is letting people know a couple of weeks ahead of time that you are throwing a costume party. This allows them not only the time to get a costume, but also gives them the time to make a decision about what they want to do the night of Halloween. People often plan their Halloween adventures early, so the earlier you let them know about your party the more likely they can commit.

You have to not only prepare your own adult costume, but get decorations for your home as well! If it is an adult only party, feel free to make things pretty creepy. They can handle it! Candles, cobwebs, creepy body parts and bloody weapons all make great additions.

Make sure you’ve got plenty of foods and beverages ready in properly themed displays. There are a variety of different Halloween themed punches you can create.

Have activities, like bobbing for apples, a costume contest, and maybe some horror movie trivia. Give the guests something to do in between mingling and eating!

Go all out, and you’ll have the party everyone will talk about the next day.

Halloween Mask Safety

August 29th, 2011 | Posted by ChristineM in Halloween Mall - (0 Comments)

When it comes to Halloween, we all want to have the coolest costumes, the greatest get up of everyone we know. Sometimes those costumes come with Halloween masks, or call for them to be complete. But it’s really important that both adults and children are safe when it comes to masks.

Never wear or have a child wear a mask that obstructs their view. This is very important when sending kids out to go trick or treating. You need your child to be able to see both ways when crossing the street as well as the ground in front of them. If your child is nagging you about wearing their mask, tell them to lift it onto their heads when walking and to put it back on when knocking on people’s doors.

You also want to make sure Halloween masks aren’t too stifling. Sometimes, even as adults, we don’t realize we are getting overheated. Take a breather every once in a while.

Lastly, be sure to tell children to never go with someone just wearing a mask, especially adults. Tell them to ask that they take it off, so they can see if it’s someone they know. And always let them know that you won’t approach them wearing your mask, either, so they know it’s you.

So you may have a good idea what you are going dressed up as, but what about the kids? They may already know what they want to be and chances are, it’s going to be a character from one of the multiple major kids movies that have come out this year. These kids costumes are sure to be popular this year:

  • The Smurfs: The Smurfs have returned with their big screen debut and kids are definitely going to want to be them this Halloween. Even though the cartoon is from the 50s originally, its resurgence is going strong!
  • Transformers: With the last Transformers movie out earlier this year, kids are going to want to be Optimus Prime and save the universe from destruction! The full costume, mask included, is going to be a big hit with the boys.
  • Harry Potter: Harry Potter is going to be popular for both adult and kids Halloween costumes. And the great thing is, there are so many characters to choose from you can even theme up the whole family and go together!
  • Winnie the Pooh: Winnie the Pooh also made a comeback on the big screen, so for toddlers especially, you might find they’ll want to be Piglet, Eeyore, or even Pooh himself!

Hot Adult Costumes This Year

August 15th, 2011 | Posted by ChristineM in Halloween Mall - (0 Comments)

Every year for Halloween, there are the  hot adult costumes that everyone is looking to get. And if you want to be in on the know and get a popular costume this year, you can look no further. These are some of the costumes that are going to be super popular this year:

  • The Green Lantern and Captain America: The two biggest superheros of the summer are going to definitely be sticking around this fall. You are going to see a lot of Green Lantern and Captain America costumes, but if you want the best one, go for the Movie Prestige version (like the one pictured).
  • Tron: The Tron: Legacy movie didn’t hit theaters until December of last year, meaning we didn’t yet get to celebrate all its cool costumes for Halloween yet! Whether the gals are dressed as Quorra or the guys as Sam Flynn, it’s going to be a great hit (and both would make a great couples idea!).
  • Harry Potter: With the very last movie having just came out this summer, the Harry Potter craze will be alive and well in October. Think major characters from the last flick, like Snape, Bellatrix, Voldemort and of course, Ron, Hermione and Harry himself.
  • Lady Gaga or Katy Perry: These two are still all over the place, so donning their crazy wigs and outfits will make a great  choice for women this season. Their outfits may be really wild for all year round, but they;’re the perfect adult costumes for Halloween!
